Drat.

Ubuntu has been hanging/locking up lately. It reports CPU usage as 100% and then refuses to respond after that. It is also not task-specific; it has happened while using Firefox, playing a game, and using Dia to draw a diagram. Other users have commented on this problem and offered solutions on the Ubuntu support forums.

I don’t believe I did this.

While installing packages, I looked at the output in the terminal and, worried by some lines of text, highlighted them with the mouse and wanted to copy and paste them in the text editor. So I pressed Ctrl-C and the process terminated. I re-installed the packages.
