While installing packages, I looked at the output in the terminal and, worried by some lines of text, highlighted them with the mouse and wanted to copy and paste them in the text editor. So I pressed Ctrl-C and the process terminated. I re-installed the packages.

Got this off Linux and Open Source Blog:
The Automatix! Directly from the forum post:
This is a graphical interface for installation of a lot of apps on Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Xubuntu BREEZY (DOES NOT WORK ON Warty, Hoary or Dapper) and for tweaking a few things to get your Ubuntu box up and working in full throttle in the quickest possible timespan.
Does cool stuff such as:
installing codecs, useful packages, useful scripts for nautilus, extensions for firefox, MS true-type fonts, configures numlock/ctrl-alt-del…
Now check it out here.

So I was lucky to receive a copy of Ubuntu 5.10 installation CD and live CD (thanks to these guys! =) ). I’ve been curious about trying out Linux already, but the main things keeping me back were:
- Having to dual-boot means having to partition–I’ve always thought partitioning puts your hard drive at risk
- Hardware configuration: okay, so I am a lazy noob.
The live CD was a real help in assuring me that everything would run smoothly in Linux. Something funny happened, though: While running the live CD, I tried to install some packages. I guess I shouldn’t have done that. The whole process hanged while the packages were being installed (they were downloaded successfully). Wonder where Ubuntu was trying to install them into. I was hoping it would resolve itself until my CD drive gave up and stopped spinning–then there was nothing left to do except switch off the power. But everything was fine when I started the laptop up again. Heh.
But it was fun to try out the live CD and check out how Ubuntu looks like on the screen and how well it detects one’s hardware.
Now the only issue left was about partitioning… I found this wiki article helpful:WindowsDualBootHowTo. There is also a series of screenshots of the Ubuntu installation process here (it’s Ubuntu 5.04 though, but they’re pretty similar) .
